Things I learned from the plumber

1. Drano is bad, very bad. Apparently, it gets really hard after it gets really hot, thus making more of a mess in your pipes. And gel Drano turns rubbery. At least, so says the plumber. . .

2. Eggshells in the garbage disposal are bad, very bad.

3. Always run the water for a long while after you turn off the garbage disposal. It takes a while for the water to push the foodstuff all the way down.

4. Even if you don't have a coupon and you don't know if the company has a coupon, ask for him to give it to you anyway.

5. Writing out an invoice at the car is a good time for a smoke break. (This one I actually already knew.)


I'm always open to learning more about plumbing. Does anyone have any more plumbing tips for me?

Yes...NEVER put potato peelings in the drain. They will turn them into glue. I have learned this one the hard way...

I thought eggshells were good to sharpen the blades.

No idea where I heard that though.

I'm curious whether hot or cold water is better for running the garbage disposal. I've heard both.

Last year the day before we left for an internation trip I learned that the plumber charges $2,100 to come to your house and fix your broken sewer line for 6 hours. Guess Mike went into the wrong profession.

I learned that trying to put potato peelings down your garbage disposal was bad, really bad, the hard way. We had to have the rotorooter man come to our house in Phoenix and he told me not to do it. I decided he wasn't very smart because if he hadn't told me not to do it, I would have continued to put the peels down the garbage disposal and would have had to have had him over multiple times. Fortunately he saved me a lot of money and our peelings are all safely in some land fill.

Another taboo topic: money

I don't have a lot of real visible or artistic talents, but one talent that has served me well is an ability to manage and organize money well. A few of my sisters-in-law have asked me how I do the family budget, so this is a straight up accounting of how I do the accounting. When we get a paycheck: 10% tithing right off the top Then, with the remainder (net minus tithing), I divy it up into percentages and put money into different "funds" -- that I keep track of in the back of my paycheck because I'm old school like that. Mortgage: I figure out the percentage it will take to cover my mortgage. Usually 29-30%. I think this percentage needs to stay under 35% of take-home after tithing. Baby steps: 20% goes to meeting financial goals a la Dave Ramsey's baby steps.
