Nuh-uh!

The most amazing news of the day.

In slightly less amazing news, I heard a language expert on Radio West today (it's a Utah thing) talking about how language purists hate Americans' usage of "hopefully" as in, "Hopefully my mom will forget to make me do my homework and I can play the Wii." OR, "Hopefully they never consummated their marriage, but yeah, right!" I never thought about it before, but of course that is incorrect. Hopefully I won't misuse the word anymore, I thought to myself, hopefully.

That story is crazy. I must admit that I have been grossed out and fascinated all at the same time.

I just don't even know what to say.

Hopefully you will explain why hopefully is used incorrectly. (I'm just not that smart to get why it is worng.)

Katie, same adorable Annette!

Carina, I have never known you to not know what to say!

Amy, this gets into it. Apparently, some people really get bugged by the word being used as a sentence adverb. I had no idea.

there's an old bulgarian proverb.. the man who marries his twin sister gets prescriptivists for children.

Those Bulgarians.

mine was pretty good but, i'm sorry, the one about the goat with diarrhea in spring was the real proverb.

INTERESTINGLY, I never knew that sentence adverbs were discouraged.

And the twin story is bizarre! How do you find such drama?
did i tell you that i love your profile pic?

Yikes!!! This REALLY makes a case for transparency in adoption. Awkward is an understatement.

!!!!!

Hopefully I never have twins. And hopefully I will never have to give them up for adoption. And hopefully they never meet later in life. And hopefully they won't fall in love with each other. Need I go on? Is everyone sufficiently irritated?

This was one of the more random groupings of comments that I have ever seen. Quite a delight! Did I mention that I too love your profile picture? And whatever would we do without those bulgarian proverbs? They just have a way of making sense of it all.

If they had had kids, it would be like the opposite of the Darwin Awards, like peeing in the gene pool. Sorry to be so crass. But not sorry enough to not do it.

People who complain about "hopefully" are ill-informed. The Germans have been using the cognate "hoffentlich" in the same way for centuries.
